Soaring Across the World | The Oxford Outlook Program Winter Visit Program at the School of Public Policy and Adminstration has successfully concluded

With the strong support of the International Cooperation Office, the Oxford Outlook Winter Visiting Program, organized by the School of Public Policy and Adminstration, was launched in two phases from January 21 to February 17, 2024. This project provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in learning at Oxford University College. During this period, it organized heavyweight industry invited guest lectures, visits from top UK companies, study abroad guidance to assist in applying to world-class universities, authentic British social expansion, and a deep experience of British culture.

To ensure the smooth progress of this project, the college held a pre departure training meeting in Room 305 of the college building on January 12th. The meeting provided students with detailed explanations on various issues to pay attention to, including pre departure preparation, entry and exit preparation, personal and property protection, and national information security, to ensure their safe travel.


1、 Course learning

1. BFM course group (Business Finance Management)

The BFM course group covers topics such as corporate leadership, labor market, performance management, investment banking, and digital AI combined with finance. In a highly interactive teaching atmosphere, not only does it deepen students' understanding of professional knowledge, but it also cultivates their ability to think from multiple perspectives.


2. LLD class group (Language Literature Digital Culture and Communication)

The LLD course group system introduces knowledge about foreign literature and the origin of English writing. In the course "Maps in Literature", the professor started with the famous work "The Lord of the Rings" and explained the important role of maps in expressing the macro world in a literary work. Through the wonderful lectures of the professors, the students achieved a collision and sublimation of thinking and inspiration.


3. PPE class group (Philosophy Political Science Economics Law)

PPEL's courses cover multiple research topics, such as the 2008 financial crisis, Brexit, AI ethics, immigration politics, digital diplomacy, and the uncertainty of global geopolitics. 16 professors from Oxford University gave vivid and in-depth professional lectures to students at colleges such as Pembroke College, Somerville College, and Trinity College, enriching their knowledge reserves and enabling them to have a deeper understanding of their respective majors.


4. Workshop

"Workshop" is a distinctive educational activity that combines academic and fun elements, with diverse forms and a wide range of themes. The class of Public Speaking starts with a purple cow, and students explore the mystery of expression with Mr. Tom Brooks - dare to be different; In the class of "British etiquette", students listened to Mr. Lawrence Coupland's interesting sharing of his only "conversation" with King Charles during his studies at the University of Cambridge. They also learned about British dining and dressing etiquette, and intuitively felt the cultural differences between China and Britain; Mr. Matt Barber told his classmates about the script writing, production process, and his experience in the English drama Downton Abbey. Nine exciting and unparalleled "workshops" allow students to actively express their opinions in a relaxed and lively atmosphere, generate thinking collisions, and reap fruitful rewards.


5. Music video production

As one of the final assignments, the students have invested a great deal of effort in the production of music videos. Everyone takes every step seriously, from script creation to actual filming, to post production editing and dubbing, each step has undergone careful planning and division of labor and cooperation. In order to produce high-quality music videos, the students fully utilized their creativity and teamwork spirit. By delving into and presenting different themes, students not only improve their creative skills, but also bring a highly valuable audio-visual feast to the audience.

6. End of class report

The project team chose "Differences in Chinese and English Translation", "Discussion on Article 13 of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act", and "When NPU Meets OU" as the reporting topics. Through detailed data and vivid cases, they fully demonstrated the professional ability and spiritual style of the students at the University of Technology, and received unanimous praise from everyone. The professors also provided valuable suggestions on the production, font usage, and background selection of PPTs, providing useful references for future academic exchanges and expressions among students.


2、 Cultural experience

1. Visit

Arriving at Oxford, students visited the magic of Hogwarts dinner in Christ Church, where Harry Potter was filmed; Go boating in Punting and feel the gentle breeze and waves; Dialogue with top brains in the library of Oxford University; I also went to various museums to see the Queen's astrology and Einstein's blackboard. At the same time, the students also went to London and saw Tower Bridge and Big Ben, which were once only seen in English textbooks.


2. Ball

The ball is the most anticipated part of the project for students, where they experience the authentic English style "the ball" commonly seen in English dramas. After the dance, students expressed that the ball not only allowed them to experience authentic British culture, but also allowed them to make many new friends and strengthen their connections with each other.


3. Afternoon Tea&High Table Dinner

In this activity, students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge of British etiquette learned in class to practical life. At afternoon tea and high table dinner, students dressed in formal attire tasted the most authentic traditional British cuisine. This traditional British aristocratic classical charm of Oxford has continued for a long time, bringing unforgettable experiences to students.


Through the two-week Oxford Outlook Winter Visiting Program, students experienced different educational models and national traditions, gained interdisciplinary cutting-edge knowledge, and received excellent lectures from top professors; Appreciated the beautiful scenery of Oxford and visited famous attractions in the UK; I have made friends from all over the world and broken through the barriers of my abilities; Embracing the collision of cultures and enjoying the diversity of the world.

The road is obstructed and long, and the journey is approaching. The journey is continuous, and the future is promising! In the future, students will definitely carry forward the spirit of working adults and showcase the confident demeanor of students from the University of Technology on the stage of the new era!
